Ultrafast Voltammetry for Probing Interfacial Electron Transfer in Molecular Wires

Abstract: Electron transfer inside self-assembled monolayers made from complex redox-active oligophenylenevinylene molecular wires is examined by ultrafast cyclic voltammetry. Rate constants above 10(6) s(-1) are measured when the electroactive moieties are easily accessible to counterions from the electrolyte. These counterion movements are necessary to compensate the local charge created upon electron transfer. Conversely, if the redox center is buried within long hydrophobic diluents, the counterion movement towards … Show more

“…Under electrochemical conditions, this kind of molecules exhibits interesting switching properties though the control of its ferrocene redox state. [81,[86][87][88] The dissymmetric monothiol parent of this molecule exhibits a fast redox reaction when self-assembled on gold electrodes, [89,90] establishing that electron transport is very efficient through this kind of molecule. Figure 10 shows three typical I-V curves for molecular junctions involving Fc-VPM molecules and different gap widths.…”

“…Indeed, this method allows for the investigation of extremely fast molecular events that occur within nano-and sub-nanometer distances from a working-electrode surface. [46] Voltammograms obtained upon varying the scan rate over a large range are depicted in Figure 8. At slow scan rates, well-defined bell-shaped curves are obtained (Figure 8a), as expected for adsorbed material.…”

“…The bare spherical gold electrode was built following the procedure presented in [12]. The counter electrode was a Pt foil, and the reference electrode was a saturated calomel electrode (SCE).…”
