Ultrafast Structure Switching through Nonlinear Phononics

Abstract: We describe an ultrafast coherent control of the transient structural distortion arising from nonlinear phononics in ErFeO3. Using density functional theory, we calculate the structural properties as input to an anharmonic phonon model that describes the response of the system to a pulsed optical excitation. We find that the trilinear coupling of two orthogonal infrared-active phonons to a Raman-active phonon causes a transient distortion of the lattice. The direction of the distortion is determined by the pol… Show more

“…As a consequence a pump in the THz, with a typical duration of fractions of picoseconds, is about one or two orders of magnitude more efficient than a visible pulse, with a typical duration of tens of femtoseconds. It is also worth mentioning that a possible alternative mechanism to the one discussed here to induce coherent phonon oscillations is via the so-called ionic Raman scattering 13,[47][48][49][50] . In this case the pump electric field excites two infra-red active optical phonons, that can in turn couple and transfer energy to a Raman-active one, thanks to the presence of anharmonic (trilinear) phononic interactions.…”

“…R ij = V c ∂ Q χ ij is the Raman tensor, which is given by the linear electric susceptibility, χ ij , and the volume of the unit cell, V c . Phonon linewidths lie in the range of κ ≈ Ω/10 to Ω/20 for the materials that we consider here, where Ω is the eigenfrequency of the phonon mode [9,21,23]. For a detailed derivation, see for example reference [24].…”

“…Juraschek and co-workers explored this coupling term theoretically for the case of two IR phonons polarized along different directions, where a coupling to non-A g Raman phonons is induced. 22 Taking derivatives of Eqn. 4 gives the equations of motion for the nonlinear phononics process to third order:Q…”
