Ultrafast pump–probe spectroscopy of neutral FenOm clusters (n, m < 16)

Abstract: Neutral iron oxide clusters (FenOm, n,m ≤ 16) are produced in a laser vaporization source using O2 gas seeded in He. The neutral clusters are ionized with a sequence of...

“…S1, ESI †). 16 Briefly, a pulsed Nd:YAG laser was used for ablation of a pure 1/4 00 nickel rod under high vacuum conditions (B7.5 Â 10 À8 torr). The plasma plume was directed by expansion of a seeded He gas pulse (1% O 2 ), confined to a 1 Â 60 mm collision region, and skimmed to a collimated molecular beam diameter of 2 mm.…”

“…An exponential decay function and plateau function are used to fit all cluster transients, described in detail previously. 16,17 These are both convoluted with the Gaussian instrumental response function, where the exponential decay function accounts for the fast relaxation in transient signals associated with an intermediate metastable state of a neutral cluster that decays with the measured lifetime (t) and the plateau function represents a stable long-lived (42.5 ps) excited state that survives longer than the experiment.…”

“…The experimental methods and instrumental setup were described previously. 26,27 Briefly, neutral clusters were produced through ablation of a pure 0.25" diameter Ti rod by the second harmonic of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser in the presence of a seeded He gas pulse (1% O2). The ablation plume was confined to a 1 x 60 mm collision region and reduced to a molecular beam diameter of 2 mm by a charged skimmer, deflecting all but the neutral clusters.…”

“…Here, we report the excited state transient signals of neutral Cr2On (n = 0-4) clusters using two-color pump-probe spectroscopy and apply theoretical calculations to understand the increasing metallic behavior as a function of sequential oxidation. A time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOF-MS) 20,21 coupled to synchronized sub-35 fs laser pulses was employed to measure the excited state lifetimes of neutral Cr oxide clusters. A single 400 nm (3.1 eV) pump photon initiates a charge transfer and relaxation mechanism that is probed through ionization by a synchronized strong-field 800 nm (1.55 eV) probe beam.…”
