Ultraductile Cementitious Structural Health Monitoring Coating: Waterborne Polymer Biomimetic Muscle and Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane‐Assisted C‐S‐H Dispersion

Abstract: Cement‐based sensors (CBSs) have demonstrated potential in structural health monitoring (SHM) despite rare applications due to their poor flexibility and sensing accuracy/protection with robustness. Herein, a promising strategy is reported to design a waterborne epoxy resin (WEP)‐modified cement‐based composite coating sensorcapable of simultaneous stable SHM and durable protection. The interpenetrating network (IPN) formed by WEP within cement paste is bionic to the toughness and crack resistance of biologica… Show more

“…51 Further investigations suggest that Ca 2+ may be captured by the carboxyl group within OA, thereby forming a crucial bridging ion connecting OA and the α-HH substrate. 52 These findings shed light on the adsorption mechanism of OA on the α-HH surface and its interaction with Ca 2+ .…”

“…The mixing protocols and processes have a large influence on the fluidity and workability of UWC, particularly when AWAs and superplasticizers are added. Potential chemical and physical interactions, such as cement hydrates, the adsorption of superplasticizers, and AWA crosslinking in UWCs, will be greatly affected [27]. When AWAs and superplasticizers are mixed with cement mortar slurry, the cement particles are wrapped by AWAs, so the amount of superplasticizer that is adsorbed decreases, which results in a slow setting [28].…”

“…As the condition of bridges continues to deteriorate, more bridges will need repair each year. In China, the problem of aging concrete structures is also very serious. It is estimated that in 2010, the maintenance cost of bridges alone in China amounted to 360–540 billion RMB. Coating protection is an important means of improving concrete’s durability, ensuring that concrete structures can reach their service age, and reducing maintenance costs. , Concrete deterioration problems are closely related to water transport. , Hydrophobic impregnation is a common method of improving the durability of concrete by increasing the hydrophobicity of the concrete surface. It protects the concrete by reducing the damage caused by aggressive ions carried by water. Silane and siloxanes all contain an alkyl group and several alkoxy groups.…”
