Ultradian oscillation in expression of four melatonin receptor subtype genes in the pineal gland of the grass puffer, a semilunar-synchronized spawner, under constant darkness

Abstract: Melatonin receptor gene expression as well as melatonin synthesis and secretion activities were examined in the pineal gland of the grass puffer, which exhibits unique lunar/tidal cycle-synchronized mass spawing: spawning occurs before high tide on the day of spring tide during spawing season. Melatonin synthesizing activity was assessed by the abundance of arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase 2 (AANAT2) mRNA. The amount of aanat2 mRNA was low during light phase and initiated to increase after the light was turn… Show more

“…We found that increases in Δneurogranin were associated with lower FA and higher MD. Neurogranin is a postsynaptic neuronal protein that is thought to be involved in synaptic plasticity, synaptic regeneration, long-term potentiation, and learning and memory (Pak et al 2000; Diez-Guerra 2010; Blennow and Zetterberg 2015). Levels of neurogranin have been shown to be elevated in AD, predict conversion from MCI to AD, and predict cognitive decline in cognitively normal individuals (Tarawneh et al 2016; Kester et al 2015).…”

“…Optimal performance requires the proper choice of features. For instance, ERP and MRCP-based BCI typically reach better performances when using time-domain features, whereas SSVEP and mental imagery-based BCIs should use PSD or similar features [85, 86, 87]. Preprocessing and decoding algorithms should also be selected depending on the amount of available training data and EEG channels [85, 87].…”

“…This approach quantifies biologically relevant metrics such as myelination and iron concentrations, oligodendrocyte distributions, and the g-ratio of fibre pathways (Mohammadi et al, 2015, Weiskopf et al, 2015). As these measures are quantitative in nature, they are largely invariant to specific scanner protocols and offer improved neurobiological specificity, thus facilitating our understanding of brain-behaviour mechanisms, improving reproducibility, and identifying novel biomarkers for clinical research.…”
