Ultracompact Broadband Plasmonic Polarimeter

Abstract: Polarization is one of the fundamental properties of light, which is inherited from the vectorial nature of electromagnetic waves. Measuring states of polarizations (SOPs) is widely used for remote sensing applications. A number of ultracompact polarimeters that analyze SOPs at a single detection without splitting of incident beams have been demonstrated recently. However, the development of a broadband polarimeter remains challenging due to the resonant feature of their building blocks. Here, an ultracompact … Show more

“…Besides the discussed metasurfaces, numerous optical components have been replaced with the metasurfaces that have merits in compactness and performance. Representative examples are polarizer, diffuser, beam deflector, beam splitter, and color filter [33,34,[151][152][153][154][155][156][157][158][159][160][161][162][163]. Recently, with conventional bulk optical elements, it is tricky to output ultracompact devices, because the resultant device cannot help big sizes to have electronic, mechanic, and optical parts as a whole.…”

“…As components of metasurfaces, plasmonic‐ or high‐index dielectric antennas are exploited to impose abrupt modulation of light through strong light‐matter interaction. By elaborately arranging predesigned antennas, various optical devices such as wave‐plates, optical filters, flat‐lenses, beam deflectors, and holograms are proposed and experimentally demonstrated . However, metasurfaces have a limitation that the functionality is fixed if the information of incident light is not changed or mechanical actuation is not involved .…”

“…The ability to modulate electromagnetic characteristics in subwavelength scale, especially optical phase or amplitude, insure that metasurfaces are suitable for various applications such as hologram generation, anomalous beam refraction, color generation, and orbital angular momentum generation . They are also being studied for versatile functionalities as a means of replacing bulk optical components such as lens, waveplates, polarizers, diffuser, and retroreflector . Recently, thanks to widespread attention of metamaterials in nanophotonics, the scattering radiation patterns including abovementioned multipolar phase effects are utilized for various optical or physical applications .…”
