Ultracentrifugation for ultrafine nanodiamond fractionation

Abstract: In this paper we propose a method for ultrafine fractionation of nanodiamonds using the differential centrifugation in the fields up to 215000g. The developed protocols yield 4-6 nm fraction giving main contribution to the light scattering intensity. The desired 4-6 nm fraction can be obtained from various types of initial nanodiamonds: three types of detonation nanodiamonds differing in purifying methods, laser synthesis nanodiamonds and nanodiamonds made by milling. The characterization of the obtained hydro… Show more

“…Fractionation of NDs was investigated previously [ 25 , 26 , 29 , [34] , [35] , [36] , [37] , [38] , [39] , [40] , [41] , [42] , 76 ]. However, optical spectra of different fractions have not been considered in detail.…”

“…However, optical spectra of different fractions have not been considered in detail. Previously, it was found that non-diamond carbon could be removed from ND fractions [ 39 ] and the fractions have different surface chemical composition and therefore physicochemical properties [ 40 , 76 ], which apparently may affect the optical properties. Thus, we used centrifugation to see in more detail how the UV/vis spectrum and absorption at 532 nm by OA measurements depend on fraction size and composition.…”

“…According to studies by Koniakhin [24], these values of z-potential exhibit the evidence of the produced colloidal stability. Measures were taken in colloidal solutions before and after centrifugation.…”

“…PEG-CNT composites were found to be hemocompatible, nontoxic to mice fibroblast cell lines and effective as a drug carrier (Hindumathi, Jagannatham, Haridoss, & Sharma, 2018). PEG was aided to produce ND with smaller particle size for harder centrifugation conditions (Koniakhin et al, 2018). For a similar reason, PEG was also used to coat antimicrobial nanoparticles (such as silver, zinc, etc.)…”
