Ultra-short term HRV features as surrogates of short term HRV: a case study on mental stress detection in real life

Abstract: BackgroundThis paper suggests a method to assess the extent to which ultra-short Heart Rate Variability (HRV) features (less than 5 min) can be considered as valid surrogates of short HRV features (nominally 5 min). Short term HRV analysis has been widely investigated for mental stress assessment, whereas the validity of ultra-short HRV features remains unclear. Therefore, this study proposes a method to explore the extent to which HRV excerpts can be shortened without losing their ability to automatically det… Show more

“…Therefore, we state the importance of accounting for long-range correlations in the assessment of the changes in the complexity of heart rate variability induced by mental stress. This may have relevance for the practical applications focused on the detection of mental workload or stress [ 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 ]).…”

“…As a solution, the analysis of short term recordings using durations considerably shorter than the standard of 300 s was recently suggested 15 . However, the shorter the time series the more the different HRV measures deviate from the calculations carried out over the 300 s duration 18 , 19 . E.g.…”

“…For each binary problem, Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to investigate radiomic feature variation between two different groups (ER+ vs ER-, PR+ vs PR-, HER2+ vs HER2-, TN vs Others). Median trend or feature trend, using the following convention, was also investigated [54][55][56]:…”
