Ultra-sensitive ethylene post-harvest monitor based on cavity ring-down spectroscopy

Abstract: We describe the application of cavity ring-down spectroscopy (CRDS) to the detection of trace levels of ethylene in ambient air in a cold storage room of a fruit packing facility over a several month period. We compare these results with those obtained using gas chromatography (GC), the current gold standard for trace ethylene measurements in post-harvest applications. The CRDS instrument provided real-time feedback to the facility, to optimize the types of fruit stored together, and the amount of room ventila… Show more

“…A CRDS analyzer for C 2 H 4 (model G1106) was recently developed by the company Picarro (Santa Clara, CA, USA) to monitor ethylene production associated with post-harvest fruit ripening (Fidric et al 2003;Wahl et al 2006). We have applied the instrument to estimate N 2 fixation based on real-time estimates of acetylene reduction.…”

“…The instrument is insensitive to changes in ambient temperature, and interferences from CO 2 , methane and water. See Wahl et al (2006) and the Picarro website (http://picarro.com/) for further description of the analyzer, including wavelength range and type of laser.…”

“…Many of the initial measurements focused on small compounds. Field measurements have all been demonstrated for ethyne, (52,56 -58) ethene, (58,59) ethane, (60) and formaldehyde. (61) Measurements have been demonstrated for larger molecules; however, the rovibrational spectra of larger hydrocarbons become rapidly diffuse as the size of the compounds increase beyond two carbon atoms.…”
