Ultra‐sculpturing of seed morphotypes in selected species of genus Salvia L. and their taxonomic significance

Abstract: The taxonomic importance of macromorphological and micromorphological seed characteristics was investigated using SEM of ten species of the Salvia genus from Pakistan. The aim was to identify diagnostic seed ultrastructural features that could aid in species delimitation, correct identification and phylogenetic position. The ultrastructure of Salvia varies greatly, and a wide range of unique micromorphological features have been observed. Seed micromorphological features were explored by SEM, including seed sh… Show more

“…It includes the examination of both the structural and functional aspects of pollen grains and spores (Ngernsaengsaruay et al, 2023). Morphological investigations of microstructure of plant parts are of significant importance, as pollen characteristics are valuable in resolving complex issues related to the inter‐relationships among various taxa (Abid et al, 2023; Jabeen et al, 2022). They also play a crucial role in assessing hierarchical positions, particularly in the context of families, subfamilies, tribes, genera, species, and subspecies (Gravendyck et al, 2021).…”

“…The taxonomic position of Asteraceous taxa is made due to its unique pollen spine characters is one of the distinguishing features in the systematic of Asteraceae. Microscopic studies were used for the identification of lower taxonomical levels of closely related genera of Asteraceae (Ahmad et al, 2013; Jabeen et al, 2023). The pollen of the genus of Vernonieae (Asteraceae) was usually eurypalynous with echinolophate or subechinolophate pollen grains ornamentation which contains unique pollen micro‐morphological features (Atiyha & Al‐Khesraji, 2022).…”

“…Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is important in this study because it allows for the imaging and characterization at microscale resolutions (Jabeen et al, 2023; Majeed et al, 2023). SEM reveals the shape, structure, and interactions of the catalyst with plant biomass, offering knowledge on how these catalysts improve the breakdown of intricate plant tissues into important biofuel precursors (Saka et al, 2022).…”
