Ultra-large optical modulation of a size-tunable flexible electrochromic honeycomb mesoporous tungsten oxide film

Abstract: A size tunable flexible electrochromic honeycomb mesoporous tungsten oxide film with ultra-large optical modulation is achieved by breath figure self-assembly of polymer-like ultrathin W18O49 nanowires.

“…The CE values were determined from the slope of the linear region of the OD versus current density plot, yielding values of 33.7 cm 2 /C for W 18 O 49 film at a wavelength of 550 nm (figure 4(d)). These results can be compared with other works on W 18 O 49 thin films [46,47,49,[58][59][60], although there is no standard protocol for characterization (see table S1). The optical contrast calculated at 633 nm (figure 4(a)) and the CE (figure 4(d)) show that spray-coated W 18 O 49 thin films have performances comparable to films obtained with techniques such as solvothermal synthesis [49,58,60] and spin coating [59], and higher than films obtained by the layer-by-layer method [46].…”

“…Nanostructured WO x films have been intensively studied and proved to be a potential candidate. [35][36][37] Therefore, a nanostructured WO x film consisting of nanoparticles was designed and prepared herein. It was deposited tightly on a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode as the EC functional layer.…”

“…37 Owing to its excellent structural stability, large surface area and high porosity, the honeycomb structure with hexagonal-patterned pores has been applied in Li-ion batteries, electrochromic, gas sensing, photoelectric and oil-water separation to improve their performance. [38][39][40][41][42] Accordingly, various methods including lithography, colloidal template and self-assembly have been developed to construct a porous structure with a honeycomb pattern. 43,44 The breath figure method in which water droplets are employed as the templates for ordered hexagonal pores has been used extensively because of its simple preparation, low cost and environmental friendliness.…”
