Ultra-High Speed Cylindrical Grinding Using CBN Wheel for High Efficiency

Abstract: Ultra-high speed grinding is an effective method for increasing the productivity of automotive part manufacturing. A cylindrical grinding machine with a maximum wheel speed of 15000 rpm and a maximum work speed of 5000 rpm has been developed. Machining tests were performed at wheel speeds up to 240 m/s. Grinding tests conducted with a vitrified bonded CBN wheel revealed that the workpiece surface roughness was reduced by decreasing the traverse feed per workpiece revolution. Surface roughness remained small, e… Show more

“…A Renishaw laser interferometer was used to measure the workpiece table speed v w . A lower workpiece table speed combining with higher grinding wheel speed would generally give better surface [15]. The workpiece table speed was selected as v w =40, 60, 80, 100, and 120mm/s for the study [16].…”

“…To minimize the wear effect of the grinding wheel, dressing was applied before each type of the grinding tests. (Nakayama et al 2004). The workpiece table speed was selected as v w =40, 60, 80, 100, and 120mm/s, respectively, for the study (Gao and Lai 2005).…”

“…In our previous work, we have implemented an ultra-high speed cam grinding machine on automobile production lines [1] [2] and have developed an ultra-high speed contour grinding process [3]. Through our studies to date, we have demonstrated the effectiveness of ultra-high speed grinding in boosting grinding efficiency.…”
