Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays

Luis A. Anchordoqui

Abstract: In this report we review the important progress made in recent years towards understanding the experimental data on ultra-high-energy (E 10 9 GeV) cosmic rays. We begin with a general survey of the available data, including a description of the energy spectrum, the nuclear composition, and the distribution of arrival directions. At this point we also give a synopsis of experimental techniques. After that, we introduce the fundamentals of cosmic ray acceleration and energy loss during propagation, with a view o… Show more

“…The nature of the astrophysical sources of UHECRs and their acceleration mechanism(s) remains a mystery as reviewed here [10][11][12]. Proposed sources span a large range of astrophysical objects including extremely fast-spinning young pulsars [13][14][15], active galactic nuclei (AGN) [16][17][18], starburst galaxies (SBGs) [19,20], and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) [21,22].…”
