Photonic crystals (PCs) are a field that is very important and interested in the design of a wide range of devices to control electromagnetic waves in different frequency regimes. Here, We try to introduce an all-optical device with practical applications such as fast response and high accuracy that have very critical and benchmark development in optical devices for photonic integrated circuits. In this paper, a novel modified shape 4-channel demultiplexer based on 2D-PCs by using suitable ring resonators is proposed to control light. The presented configuration includes three parts such as a direct input waveguide, a ring resonator, and four indirect waveguides for outputs of optical waves. Numerical analysis is investigated based on finite difference time domain (FDTD) method to achieve a four-band demultiplexer that has the capability to control the electromagnetic waves. Numerical results show that not only average quality factor (Q) of the 2D-PCs demultiplexer is 3969.25, but also average cross-talking value is -30.38 dB, the average transmission coefficient (T) is 0.998 and the lowest and highest channel bandwidths are 0.3 and 0.6 nm, respectively. Also, the minimum and maximum distance between any two adjacent channels is 0.6 and 1.1 nm. The all optical photonic demultiplexer has a compact footprint and occupies an area of 302 µm² and its operation is in long wavelength region. Based on the abovementioned practical performance and results, the presented optical demultiplexer is highly accurate by using a robust and low power-area that can be nominated to use photonic integrated circuits (PIC).

In this paper, the concept of photonic crystals (PhCs) is fundamental to designing and simulating an all-optical logic gate device. We proposed an all-optical switch composed of two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal waveguides with a central photonic crystal ring resonator (PCRR). The new all-optical NAND logic gate device comprises two linear waveguides coupled to each other through a single compact PCRR. The plane wave expansion (PWE) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) methods are applied to simulate the properties of the system. The structure is implemented on the operational wavelength of 1700 nm on an air wafer of only 12 μm × 12 μm. Indeed, the simulation results show that the proposed all-optical NAND gate is a strong candidate for ultrafast photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for applications in optical communications, being advantageous with high transmitting power, with simple design, and without the use of optical amplifiers and nonlinear materials.

We aim to simulate an optimal optical biosensor based on one-dimensional crystal photonics, for measuring blood and urine glucose concentration. By optimizing the sensor structure through metaheuristic optimization algorithms, sensitivity was increased. To measure blood and urine glucose concentration, these materials are used as a defect layer in one-dimensional crystal photonics, consisting of three materials: magnesium fluoride (MgF2), borosilicate glass (BK7), and orphan iodide (LiI) with refractive indices of 37/ 1, 1/5, and 1/99. By changing the concentration of glucose, the refractive index of the defect layer changes, changing the optical properties of the defect layer in the photonic crystal and the spectrum of transmitted and reflected light. According to the amount of light absorption by glucose, a wavelength range of 900-2200 nm (near infrared) was used as the input light. The transfer matrix method was used to calculate multi-layer systems. This method is based on the definition of two matrices, the boundary matrix and the diffusion matrix, which can be used to directly apply the boundary conditions. By plotting the spectrum passing through the crystal using the transfer matrix method and determining the location of the peak in the spectrum, the sensitivity of the sensor was calculated for different concentrations of glucose in blood and urine. The sensitivity obtained before optimization was 530 nm/RIU, while after optimization it reached 842 nm/RIU
