UHE neutrino damping in a thermal gas of relic neutrinos

Abstract: We present a calculation of the damping of an ultra-energetic cosmic neutrino (UHEν) travelling through the thermal gas of relic neutrinos, using the formalism of finite-temperature field theory. From the self-energy diagram due to Z exchange, we obtain the annihilation cross section for an UHEν interacting with an antineutrino from the background. This method allows us to derive the full expression for the UHEν transmission probability, taking into account the momentum of relic neutrinos. We discuss the effec… Show more

“…We assume that neutrino are non-relativistic even at sufficiently high redshift, which is a good approximation for z < 10 2 for m ν = 0.08 eV/c 2 . Effects of non-zero momentum on the neutrino annihilation cross-section are studied in [22,23]. Using the number density of relic neutrinos n CνB ≃ 112 cm −3 and the non-resonant cross-section in the high energy limit one can estimate the horizon for UHE neutrinos at highest energies.…”

“…It was then considered that, at least for the lowest of the three neutrino masses, thermal effects on the CνB might be important. These were studied in detail for a single neutrino species [12], and the transmission probabilities were calculated in the context of a more realistic three-neutrino mass spectrum [13].…”
