The 30th UEG Week took place in Vienna at the Messe Wien Exhibition and Congress Center between 8 and 11 October 2022. It was the first face to face meeting of UEG for 3 years, the previous two UEG Weeks having been delivered in the virtual format. The participants were delighted to return to the vibrant, friendly, family atmosphere they had come to love, with the total number of attendees returning almost to pre‐Covid levels. It was a triumph. There were frequent reminders that this was a significant anniversary meeting which included clinical topic based 30 year reviews and teatime treats in the social spaces, culminating in an anniversary scientific session which reviewed the outstanding progress that had be made during the last 3 decades in managing four of the most challenging diseases in gastroenterology and hepatology; hepatitis C, pancreatic cancer, gastric cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease. Following these high‐quality scientific papers, I gave a brief account of UEG's history, focusing predominantly on progress made during the last 3 years which is described below. The session closed with a short musical interlude and a firework display!.

UEG journal: The voice of European Gastroenterology

UEG journal was incepted in 2013 to give the United European Gastroenterology a voice. 1 The founders visioned that there was need for a high-quality publication of clinically relevant scientific information in the field of gastroenterology. We live in an era of rapidly expanding number of journals making it relevant for the UEG Journal to carve out its space. The open access movement has fueled the advent of many journals, some legitimate but many less so. Similarly, we see that many scientific societies branched off their main journal and developed other publishing platforms. So where are we as a Journal? Our mission is to position the UEG Journal as an authoritative, high quality and trusted journal as a portal for European digestive health. In order to achieve this mission our link with the UEG is indispensable and we benefit from Wiley as professional publishing powerhouse. Where does that bring us in 2022? As an editorial team we see a continuous upward trajectory of the quantitative metrics used to assess the impact of the journal. There is a growing engagement with the website, we have made clear inroads into Social Media, and our @UEGjournal twitter handle has become very popular. 2 We work hard to provide added value to the papers that we publish using visual abstracts that accompany every article. Articles in the journals are better cited than before and this has resulted in an increasing Clarivate Journal Impact Factor, also in 2022. Our Journal has always been a platform for publication of clinical and translational science. As the UEG for the trust invested in us.

“…A large number of abstracts were submitted to the UEG Week in 2020 (2788, with 1915 [69%] accepted) and 2021 (1966, with 1482 [74.2%] accepted). Of these abstract, 32 were subsequently accepted for publication as full papers in the UEG Journal, 3 which last impact factor has increased significantly to a new height of 6.866 (23/93 in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology). 4 The 2022 edition of UEG Week is a milestone in the history of UEG.…”
