UCLA/FNPL Underdense Plasma Lens Experiment: Results and Analysis

Abstract: Abstract. Focusing of a 15 MeV, 16 nC electron bunch by a gaussian underdense plasma lens operated just beyond the threshold of the underdense condition has been demonstrated. The strong 1.9 cm focal length plasma lens focused both transverse directions simultaneously and reduced the minimum area of the beam spot by a factor of 23. Analysis of the beam envelope evolution observed near the beam waist shows that the spherical aberrations of this underdense lens are lower than those of an overdense plasma lens, a… Show more

“…These devices possessing a temporal resolution of about one picosecond are widely used in laser and ion thermonuclear fusion experiments. There have been attempts to use a streak camera for Lidar Thomson scattering [24,25]. Figure 10 represents an example of the application of the PS-1/S1streak camera [26] for tuning the damping ring [27] at the BINP.…”

“…Focusing of electron and positron beams by wakefield, excited in plasma, in electron-positron collider is very important [8][9][10][27][28][29][30]. The focusing mechanism in the plasma, in which all electron bunches of a sequence are focused identically, has been proposed in [8][9][10].…”
