“…Any expected performance improvement subsequent to increased basicity of the body's fluids should be more evident when lactate accumulates to high concentrations in both muscle and blood (Karlsson, 1971;Sahlin, 1978), as well as in other body compartments. This may partly explain the conflicting findings in the literature (Dill et ai, 1932;Dennig et al, 1937;Johnson and Black, 1953;Margaria et al, 1971;Simmons and Hard, 1973;Jones et al, 1977 ;Kinderman et al, 1977 ;Sutton et al, 1981 ) and why in submaximal or maximal exercise of a longer ( > 8 min) or shorter ( < 20 s) duration, no such improvement was observed, although the desired acid-base shift was achieved.…”
