Dans cet article, Brigitte Schnegg († 2014) analyse l’histoire de l’amitié qui se reconfigure lors de l’ Aufklärung et de l’ Empfindsamkeit de l’espace germanophone du XVIII e siècle. S’inscrivant dans l’histoire sociale et des mentalités, l’auteure reconstruit en termes de genre des pratiques amicales entre des hommes et des femmes de lettres en Suisse, en particulier celles de Christoph Martin Wieland. Elle analyse les contours de l’amitié, sa différence avec l’amour, ses significations et ses effets sur les interprétations de soi des personnes qui se définissent dans une relation d’amitié. L’auteure apporte alors sa contribution à la compréhension des changements de valeurs qui marquent la naissance de la société bourgeoise.
