Professor Wilhelm Klemm rum 8.5. Geburtstag gewidmet Cluster der Hauptgruppenelemente sind keine Raritat; vielrnehr werden imrner neue Spezies diescs Typs gefunden. Die Cluster sind die natiirlichen Stufen zwischen einem Element und seincn isolierten Atomen oder Ionen. Sie bieten als Polykationen und Polyanionen auch Modelle fur die schrittwcise Oxidation und Reduktion eines Elements und bilden die Briicke zwischen den Elementen. Die groBe Mehrheit homonuclear verknupfter Strukturen kommt in den festcn Phasen einfacher Systerne vor. Certain groups of elements form cluster compounds preferentially. These are: the heavy 5A, 6A and 7A elements, elements of the Fe group, the elements of the main groups 4B and 5B as well as, finally, boron. Since the atomic binding energies are highest for the above elements (Fig. l), the con-Angew. Chem. Inr. Ed. Engl. 20, 33-51 (1981) 0 Verlag Chemie. GmbH, 6940 Weinheim, 1981 0S70-0833/81/010I-O33 $O2.S0/0 34 case of an oxidizing agent bound to a reducing agent without anything happening, is not serious, since there are many such examples, right up to charge transfer complexes. The clustersEn are in any case frozen-in redox steps between the element E and its electron-saturated formal cation or anion. The structural change which takes place parallel to these redox processes can be followed particularly well for the non-metals and meta-metals with predominantly localized bonds. The particular fascination of these compounds consists, therefore, not only in the occurrence of element-element bonds E-E, but also in the quasi-stepwise "break-up of element structures". Structural fragments are also formed in this process, of course, which are not formed as stable arrangements at all by the element; these correspond to excited Angew. Chem. Inf. Ed.
