1111 nlchsten Jahre wird ein Jahrliundert verflossen sein, seit W o 11 1 e r zuerst die Darstellung des Berylhums gelungen ist. Wahrend jedoch das von dem gleichen Forscher in1 Jahre vorher (1827) erstnialig als Metal1 isolierte Aluminium heute zu einem der bedeutentlsten Werkstoffe geworden ist, hat Beryllium bisher sehr wenig vou sich reden geniacht. I'atslchlich hat die Darstellung dieses interessanten Leichtmetalles bis in die jiingstc Zeit liinein derartige Schwierigkeiten bereitet, dai3 es sich erst jetzt, in dem Zeitalter vollkoninienster Metnlltechnik, nls neuer Werkstoff den jedermann bekannten 'Metallen hinzugesellt, und auf Grund seiner besonderen Eigenschaften noch in manclier Ilinsicht Bedeutung erlangen wird und in beschrlnkteni Umf;inge bereits erlangt hat.Entdeckt wurde das Beryllium 1798 von V a uq tie l i n iii den1 Mineral Beryll, von dem auch sein Kame ltergeleitei ist. Wihrend der gemeine Rohberyll trotz seiner nicht unbedeutenden Vorkommen nur wenig tiekannt ist, reicht die Kenntnis von dem grunen und blnugriinen Beryll, deni Smaragd urtd Aquamarin, in das friiheste Altertun1 zuruck. Diese Mineralien bestehen nlle aus den1 Aluniiniuni-Beryllium-Doppelsilikat 3Be0. -l120;, . GSiOt, das bei den gefarbten Modifikatiorien noch geringe Beiniengungen von Chrom-oder Eisenox yd :iufweist. Der Chrysoberyll oder Alexandrit hingegen hat die Zusainmensetzung (AIOz)z . Be, weist also einen wesentlich hoheren Berylliumgehalt auf als die vorgenannten Edelsteine. Auijerdern findet sich Beryllium noch in1 Phenakit (Se2SiOa),im Euklas und Gadolinit.Ennittlungen, welche wlhrend der letzten zwei Jalire angestellt wurden, haben ergeben, daD Rohberyll in verhiiltuisniiifiig groi3en Mengen auf der ganzen Welt gefunden wird. Die bedeutendsten, bisher bekannten Lagerstiitten befinden sich in Canada, in den Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika, Brasilien, England, Norwegen, Spanien und in1 Ural. Auch in Deutschland und h -0 1 sind verschiedene Fundorte bekannt geworden, ohne dafi bisher dereri Machtigkeit einwandfrei untersucht wurde. Yielfach findet sich das Mineral in groijen, basaltiihnlich gewachsenen, hexagonalen Saulen; uberwiegend sind jedoch grofie Beryllnester in Feldspatlugern eingebettet. Letztere Vorkommen sind fur die Berylliumgewinnung voii bevorzugtem Interesse, weil sie nur geringe Mengen Eisen als Verunreinigung enthalten und dalier einfacher uiid billiger fur die eigentliche Berylliummetallgewinnung aufgeschlossen werden konnen.Die Darstellung des Berylliums ist schon von sehr vielen Forschern versucht worden. Ehe mittels Elektrolyse an die Losuiig des Problems herangegangen wurde, ist lediglich der von Mr o h 1 e r I) eingeschlagene Weg der Hetluktion von Berylliuniverbindungen weiter verfolgt \vorden. W o h 143 r reduzierte das Berylliumchlorid mittels claruber geleiteter Kaliumdampfe und erhielt hierbei das Metrill in Form kleiner Flitterchen. Das Beryllium hat in jiingster Zeit in der Metallindustrie steigend an Bedeutung gewonnen. Man hat gefunden, daB schon wenige Prozente den Schwermetallen, besonders Eisen, Kupfer, Nickel, liervorragende Eigenschaften, wie aderordentlich hohe Harte, Festigkeit, Leitfahigkeit fur Warine und Elektrizitat, verleihen. Piir sich selbst ist das Beryllium ein sehr energisches Desoxydationsmittel. Kupfer-guB, rnit Beryllium desoxydiert, hesitzt eine Dichte und elektrische Leitfahigkeit, die der von gewalztem Elektrolytkupfer kaum nachsteht und der iiberlegen ist, die man (lurch die Reduktion mit Phosphor erreicht. Die technische Darstellung des Berylliums wurde erst durch die Anwendung elektrocheinischer Method en ermoglicht, und auch diese gaben erst Aussicht auf Erfolg, als es gelang, die Elektrolyse bei Temperaturen durchzufiihren, hei welchen das Beryllium geschmolzen ist. Das Beryllium konimt in der Natur als Bestandteil gewisser Silicate vor, unter denen der Beryll, ein Beryllium-Aluminium-Silicat, die Hauptrolle spielt . Der AufschluB des Rohberylls und die Herstellung der fur die Elektrolyse benotigten Salze stellen den Hauptteil der Kosten fur die Gewinnung von metallischem Beryllium dar . Aus dieseni ( h n d e hat man sich in jiingster Zeit in erster 1,inie bemiiht, Methoden auszuarbeiten, die eine niiiglichst quantitative Erfassung des Berylliums versprachen und wirtschaftlich waren. Technisch angewendet werden heute folgende Aufschluflmethoden : Der Aufschlul3 mit Fluorverbindungen, der alkalische AufschluS, der AufschluB rnit Chlor und der AufschluB mit Kohlensaure.
