UAV-assisted reactive routing for urban VANETs

Abstract: Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) are characterized by frequent path failures due to the high mobility caused by the sudden changes of vehicles direction. The routing paths between two different vehicles should be established with this challenge in mind. It must be stable and well connected in order to guarantee a reliable and safe delivery of packets. The aim of this work is to present a new reactive routing technique providing effective and well-regulated communication paths. These discovered paths are crea… Show more

“…Some challenges are highlighted such as LOS propagation in the sky. In [44], the terrestrial infrastructure is replaced with a drone to minimize the V2I delay on the straight road. The authors in [45] proposed using a drone to improve the packet delivery ratio and reduce the delay.…”

“…• An extension of our earlier work [7] is proposed to find the most appropriate routing path while overcoming the aforementioned issues. Indeed, the current work considers: (i) the route discovery based on fixed size control packets that are used intelligently to limit the overhead while avoiding obstructions by transmitting them through UAVs in the sky, (ii) the routing decision to select the adequate path for the data delivery, (iii) the data delivery to transmit the data packet through the selected path, and (iv) the maintenance strategy to recover path failures.…”

“…In FANETs, effective routing will support to keep services and applications stable and available all the time. The FANET is an additional support to enhance the effectiveness of existing technologies such as VANETs and MANETs [40]. The ANs can be placed and dispatched in multiple scenarios to improve VANET and MANET applications to provide end-to-end connectivity between ground nodes.…”
