UAV-Assisted Data Collection in Wireless Sensor Networks: A Comprehensive Survey

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are usually deployed to different areas of interest to sense phenomena, process sensed data, and take actions accordingly. The networks are integrated with many advanced technologies to be able to fulfill their tasks that is becoming more and more complicated. These networks tend to connect to multimedia networks and to process huge data over long distances. Due to the limited resources of static sensor nodes, WSNs need to cooperate with mobile robots such as unmanned ground veh… Show more

“…In the data collection mission, the authors of [ 20 ] proposed a data collection scheme that uses UGVs as mobile cluster heads in WSNs to assist the UAV to save data collection time and energy for SNs. The ground mobile cluster head is responsible for aggregating sensor data together and the UAV obtains the required information from it.…”

“…This can be more advantageous in collecting and delivering urgent and vital information in the disaster area. Unlike in previous research [18][19][20][21], the proposed message ferry not only introduced the concept of using drones to carry messages from one location to another. It also focused on the practicality and the actual application and usage of the concept in a real life scenario (i.e., disaster situation).…”

“…A use case that raises great interest is that of employing UAVs for data collection in WSNs [ 12 ]. The use of a UAV as a mobile sink node is one of the most commonly studied scenarios, entailing collaborations between UAVs and WSNs [ 13 ].…”
