Late Paleozoic (Variscan) magmatism is widespread in Central Europe. The Lusatian Block is located in the NE Bohemian Massif and it is part of the Saxothuringian Zone of the Variscan orogen. It is bordered by two major NW-trending shear zones, the Intra-Sudetic Fault Zone towards NE and the Elbe Fault Zone towards SW. The scarce Variscan igneous rocks of the Lusatian Block are situated close to these faults. We investigated 19 samples from Variscan plutonic and volcanic rocks of the Lusatian Block, considering all petrological varieties (biotite-bearing granites from the Koenigshain and Stolpen plutons, amphibole-bearing granites from three boreholes, several volcanic dykes, and two volcanites from the intramontane Weissig basin). We applied whole-rock geochemistry (18 samples) and zircon evaporation dating (19 samples). From the evaporation data, we selected six representative samples for additional zircon SHRIMP and CA–ID–TIMS dating. For the Koenigshain pluton, possible protoliths were identified using whole-rock Nd-isotopes, and zircon Hf- and O-isotopes. The new age data allow a subdivision of Variscan igneous rocks in the Lusatian Block into two distinct magmatic episodes. The spatial relation of the two age groups to either the Elbe Fault Zone (298–299 Ma) or the Intra-Sudetic Fault Zone (312–313 Ma) together with reports on the fault-bound character of the dated intrusions suggests an interpretation as two major post-collisional faulting episodes. This assumption of two distinct magmatic periods is confirmed by a compilation of recently published zircon U–Pb CA–ID–TIMS data on further Variscan igneous rocks from the Saxothuringian Zone. New geochemical data allow us to exclude a dominant sedimentary protolith for the Koenigshain pluton as supposed by previous investigations. This conclusion is mainly based on new O- and Hf-isotope data on zircon and the scarcity of inherited zircons. Instead, acid or intermediate igneous rocks are supposed as the main source for these I-type granitoids from the Koenigshain pluton.

a b s t r a c t U-Th-Pb (zircon and monazite) ion probe data have provided constraints on the timing of emplacement and metamorphism of magmatic rocks close to the Palaeoproterozoic, Falun base metal sulphide deposit in the Bergslagen lithotectonic unit, Fennoscandian Shield, Sweden, and, thereby the timing of mineralisation. Hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation at Falun are constrained to a short interval of several million years between a 207 Pb/ 206 Pb weighted average age of 1894 ± 3 Ma for a rhyolitic sub-volcanic rock in the felsic volcanic to sub-volcanic host rock suite, and a 207 Pb/ 206 Pb weighted average age of 1891 ± 3 Ma for a post-sulphide, porphyritic dacite dyke. Magmatism also included the emplacement of granite plutons with igneous crystallization ages of 1894 ± 3, 1894 ± 2 Ma and 1893 ± 3 Ma. The felsic sub-volcanic to volcanic activity and the emplacement of dacite dykes and granite plutons overlap in age within their respective analytical uncertainties, indicating hydrothermal alteration and sulphide mineralisation inside a narrow time span of intense magmatic activity, and burial of the supracrustal rocks. Two distinct patchy and homogeneous metamorphic monazite types in a felsic volcanic rock around and hydrothermally altered rocks at the Falun deposit yield 207 Pb/ 206 Pb weighted average ages of 1831 ± 8 Ma and 1822 ± 5 Ma, respectively. These ages fall well within the temporal range of a younger 1.84-1.81 Ga (M 2 ) metamorphic episode during the 2.0-1.8 Ga Svecokarelian orogeny, with the older episode (M 1 ) inside the Bergslagen lithotectonic unit at around 1.86 Ga. This shows the major influence of the M 2 event in the north-western part of this unit, leading to a complete resetting of the U-Th-Pb isotope system in monazite.

The sta bil ity of monazite and main te nance of orig i nal Th-U-to tal Pb ages were tested ex per i men tally un der P-T con di tions of 250-350 °C and 200-400 MPa over 20-40 days. The start ing ma te ri als in cluded the Bur net monazite + K-feld spar ± al bite ± lab ra dor ite + mus co vite + bi o tite + SiO2 + CaF2 and 2M Ca(OH)2 or Na2Si2O5 + H2O fluid. In the runs with 2M Ca(OH)2, monazite was un al tered. REE-en riched ap a tite formed at 350 °C and 400 MPa. The pres ence of the Na2Si2O5 + H2O fluid pro moted the strong al ter ation of monazite, the for ma tion of sec ond ary REE-en riched ap a tite to fluorcalciobritholite, and the for ma tion of REE-rich steacyite. Monazite al ter ation in cluded the newly de vel oped po ros ity, patchy zon ing, and par tial re place ment by REE-rich steacyite. The un al tered do mains of monazite main tained the com po si tion of the Bur net monazite and its age of (or close to) ca. 1072 Ma, while the al tered do mains showed ran dom dates in the in ter vals of 375-771 Ma (250 °C, 200 MPa run), 82-253 Ma (350 °C, 200 MPa), and 95-635 Ma (350 °C, 400 MPa). The compositional al ter ation and dis tur bance of the Th-U-Pb sys tem re sulted from fluid-me di ated cou pled dis so lu tion-reprecipitation. In na ture, such age dis tur bance in monazite can be at trib uted to post-mag matic al ter ation in gra nitic rocks or to metasomatic al ter ation dur ing meta mor phism. Rec og ni tion of po ten tially al tered do mains (dark patches in highcon trast BSE-im ag ing, de vel oped po ros ity or in clu sions of sec ond ary min er als) is cru cial to the ap pli ca tion of Th-U-Pb geo chron ol ogy.
