U–Pb detrital zircon ages from Gorgoglione Flysch sandstones in Southern Apennines (Italy) as provenance indicators

Abstract: Twenty-one sandstone samples belonging to the intermediate part of Gorgoglione Flysch (GF) dated Middle-Miocene, cropping out in the Southern Apennines (Italy), have been studied to highlight the detritus provenance. Petrographic and chemical composition indicates that the successions consist of feldspatho-quartzose and litho-feldspatho-quartzose arenites interbedded with pelitic and calciclastic layers and reveals a provenance from a basement formed by low- to medium-grade metamorphic rocks with abundant gran… Show more

“…All of these domains that form the Mesomediterranean Microplate were eroded by a hydrographic system that flows into the Rupelian Foredeep Basin. The western provenance direction of the detritus fits the indications derived by paleocurrents, indicating a southern provenance due to the anticlockwise rotation of the Apennine elements [28,[38][39][40]68].…”

“…ICPMSDataCal9.2 was used to process the experimental data obtained through the above method [39]. For detrital zircon with a 207 Pb/ 206 Pb age less than 1400 Ma, 206 Pb/ 238 U ages with a degree of concordance greater than 90% were selected, and for detrital zircons with a 207 Pb/ 206 Pb age greater than 1400 Ma, 207 Pb/ 206 Pb ages greater than 90% were selected [40][41][42].…”

“…The CL images of the detrital zircons show different internal zoning patterns [47], which indicates the derivation from different sources, including igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks [54,55]. The size of the zircon grains ranges from 50 to >200 μm (Supplementary Figure S1).…”
