Typologies of attentional networks

Abstract: Attention is a central theme in cognitive science - it exemplifies the links between the brain and behaviour, and binds psychology to the techniques of neuroscience. A visionary model suggested by Michael Posner described attention as a set of independent control networks. This challenged the previously held view of attention as a uniform concept. The idea that disparate attentional networks correlate with discrete neural circuitry and can be influenced by focal brain injuries, mental state and specific drugs … Show more

“…Reports of hemineglect in patients with right cerebral injuries are very frequent [16][17][18] , although reports of hemineglect after left injuries can also be found 15,32 . A possible explanation to this fi nding would be the fact that individuals with dysphasia were included in the group of patients with left injuries.…”

“…Patients with such injuries, initially demonstrate body image defi cits, neglect of the extracorporeal space opposite to the side of the injury 15,16 and visuomotor defi cits 17,18 . Initially, there is greater weight-bearing on the non-aff ected side of the body and postural alignment is aff ected 19 .…”

“…This network is commonly regarded as a supervisory system that resolves conflicts among different competing stimuli and is involved in planning and decision-making processes (e.g., Fan, McCandliss, Sommer, Raz, & Posner, 2002;Posner & Petersen, 1990;Raz & Buhle, 2006). In the present intensity-and attention-modulated dichotic listening paradigm, executive attention is needed to resolve conflicts between exogenous (bottom-up) orienting when attention is captured automatically by the perceptually more salient stimuli and endogenous (top-down) orienting when attention is focused voluntarily on either ear.…”
