“…However, multiple reports from the UK, Australia and Norway suggest that cross-infection between unrelated patients occurs much more frequently than previously recognised [3][4][5][6][7]10]. In keeping with the current findings, the studies from Liverpool, Melbourne, Brisbane and Bergen all found that the majority of P. aeruginosa-infected patients attending their centres harboured clonal isolates.…”

“…Typically, most patients are infected with a single clonal genotype (e.g. Liverpool or Md1) while the remainder are infected with a number of other genotypes [3,4,6,10]. The findings of the Brisbane group in particular very closely mirror the current findings, as 59% of patients were infected with a clonal genotype (39% with the same genotype (pulsotype 2) and 20% with multiple other small clusters) [4].…”

“…Among the 19 Norwegian patients, one dominant clone was found, clone N (13 patients). The presence of this dominant clone among Norwegian CF patients was published previously (Fluge et al, 2001). Unique clones among P. aeruginosa isolates from Denmark (Ud), Sweden (Us) and Norway (Un) were found in the rest of the patients.…”

“…siblings 63 or patients who visited holiday camps together 64 . This view has been disputed by reports of P. aeruginosa clones that are shared between patients, suggesting an important role for patient to patient transmission [65][66][67][68][69] as these clones are not isolated from the environment. Strong evidence for patient to patient spread was reported from the cf center in Liverpool, where molecular fingerprinting techniques identified an outbreak of a -lactam resistant P. aeruginosa strain (referred to as the Liverpool Epidemic Strain, les) 65 .…”
