Types of front of pack food labels: Do obese consumers care? Evidence from Northern Ireland

Abstract: The introduction of an effective Front of Pack food labelling (FoPL) system is at the forefront of the food policy debate. Nutritional information is seen as an effective tool to help fight obesity and its associated comorbidities, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease, for which unhealthy diet represent a major preventable risk factor. This paper explores the influence of FoPL formats on consumer's stated choice of weekly food baskets using data from a discrete choice experiment carried out in Northern Ir… Show more

“…Based on Thiene, Franceschinis, and Scarpa [88], the allocation of attributes and attribute levels to product alternatives was designed by employing a WTP b efficient design that used as Bayes priors the WTP values obtained from the estimation of a multinomial logit model (MNL) on data from the second pilot (Choice Metrics, Ngene v1.0.1, 2011). The final design consisted of sixty choice tasks divided in five blocks of twelve choice tasks each.…”

“…In particular, the origin of the product, which is usually considered an indicator of quality (Dekhili and d'Hauteville 2009;Di Vita et al 2013), is important for consumers (Perito et al 2019;Fraser and Balcombe 2018;Yin et al 2018;Grebitus et al 2018). Nowadays, the information and the format of the label are very important, by becoming a tool which can affect the consumers' food choices (Rihn et al 2019;Thiene et al 2018). The characteristics and behaviours of the consumers are also important, affecting their preferences and concerns towards the information provided (Yin et al 2018;Thiene et al 2018).…”

“…However, although much progress has been made in the past 50 years in relation to nutritional labels' regulatory framework (voluntary vs. mandatory), information type (nutrients type), and labeling format (label design), consumers still exhibit poor knowledge and low comprehension about the meaning of nutrients reported within nutritional labels (Nocella & Kennedy, 2012). Symbolic Nutritional labels such as traffic light or aggregate numeric scores could serve as alternative vehicles to address the issue of consumer understanding and thereby overcoming the presence of asymmetric information (Ellison, Lusk, & Davis, 2014;Thiene, Scarpa, Longo, & Hutchinson, 2018).…”
