This article bridges a gap in the study of Aristophanic humour by better demonstrating how individual jokes (in this case, the para prosdokian ‘contrary to expectation’ joke) contribute to the wider comic scenes in which they are embedded. After analysing ancient and modern explanations and examples of para prosdokian jokes, this paper introduces the concept of ‘comic bit’, a discrete unit of comedy that builds humour around a central premise, and establishes how para prosdokian jokes contribute to comic bits in a way that recent theories of para prosdokian cannot account for.

El objetivo de este artículo es conocer la percepción que tienen los escoliastas sobre el humor propio de la comedia. Para ello, se han analizado todos los scholia vetera que mencionan los términos clave γέλως y κωμῳδία. A fin de comprender el fondo teórico que fundamenta la anotación, en primer lugar, se recuperan las principales doctrinas de la Antigüedad sobre la comedia y el humor y, en segundo lugar, se describe el sistema que aplican los escoliastas a la explicación del humor. Siguiendo las líneas reveladas por el análisis, se estudia la naturaleza caricaturesca e incongruente de la comedia, la participación de la aischrologia, el humor servil, ciertos recursos cómicos como la paronimia y lo inesperado, así como también algunos usos especiales de γέλως. El trabajo revela que las notas de los escoliastas no son azarosas, sino que responden a un modo específico de entender los tipos de humor que caben esperar en una comedia.
