Although disfluent speech is pervasive in spoken conversation, disfluencies have received little attention within formal theories of grammar. The majority of work on disfluent language has come from psycholinguistic models of speech production and comprehension and from structural approaches designed to improve performance in speech applications. In this paper, we argue for the inclusion of this phenomenon in the scope of formal grammar, and present a detailed formal account which: (a) unifies disfluencies (self-repair) with Clarification Requests, without conflating them, (b) offers a precise explication of the roles of all key components of a disfluency, including editing phrases and filled pauses, and (c) accounts for the possibility of self addressed questions in a disfluency.

Keywords: questions, query responses, corpus study, KoSIn this article we consider the phenomenon of answering a query with a query. Although such answers are common, no large-scale, corpusbased characterization exists, with the exception of clarification requests. After briefly reviewing different theoretical approaches on this subject, we present a corpus study of query responses in the British National Corpus and develop a taxonomy for query responses. We identify a variety of response categories that have not been formalized in previous dialogue work, particularly those relevant to adversarial interaction. We show that different response categories have significantly different rates of subsequent answer provision. We provide a formal analysis of the response categories within the framework of KoS.

Refinements are proposed to the default reading of two successive pictures p, p as p and then p . The refinements are based on the Aristotelian dictum, no time without change, and the principle of inertia, no change without force, guided by the adage, a picture's worth a thousand words. Words describing pictures are formalized as predicates, some stative and some non-stative (expressing forces), and interpreted (in either case) over strings qua models, subject to finite-state projections supporting variable granularity. A form of string iconicity is explored, with an eye to more transparent representations.
