Type D personality and the degree of control of bronchial asthma

Abstract: IntroductionPoor asthma control is probably associated with both biological and psychological factors. Type D pattern of behavior is characterized by negative emotionality and inhibition in social relationships. It was previously found to be associated with cardiovascular diseases.AimTo evaluate the correlation between the degree of asthma control and the severity of the components of type D behavior pattern.Material and methodsThe research was conducted on a group of 117 subjects with bronchial asthma. The co… Show more

“…Research on the structure of temperament according to the Eysenck model in the context of bronchial asthma has been scarce, although Neuroticism as a Big Five component was previously associated with perceived poor asthma control [11]. Also, high negative emotionality, a dimension of type D behavior and a construct similar to neuroticism, was found to be associated with poor asthma control in one of our previous studies [12].…”

“…On the other hand, in the test adaptation manual in Polish, there are norms for the general population, which makes it possible to compare our results to general population standards. Also, it would be interesting to analyze the 3 factors identified in the type A behavior pattern construct by its creators: factor H (involvement in a specific activity), factor J (the involvement of the subject in professional work), and factor S (the measure of behavior dynamics) [ 12 , 20 , 21 ]. The type A scale developed by Juczyński does not differentiate these factors, considering only the tested subject’s position on the continuum between behavior pattern A and behavior pattern B.…”

“…In a monograph published by our team in 2011, type A behavior pattern was studied using the original test developed by Jenkins and Rosenman and Zyzanski in the version translated by Wrześniewski with the permission of the authors [23]. No differences between asthma patients and healthy subjects in the intensity of behavior pattern dimension were observed then.…”

“…However, the studied group included mainly patients with mild, well-controlled asthma. On the other hand, an analysis of three factors distinguished in that test – the H factor (denoting involvement in a specific action), the J factor (denoting involvement in professional work) and the S factor (measuring the dynamics of behavior) would be interesting [23]. These factors characterize well the importance of type A behavior pattern in the professional activities performed by a person, including a person with bronchial asthma.…”
