Type 2 Diabetes Research Yield, 1951-2012: Bibliometrics Analysis and Density-Equalizing Mapping

Abstract: The objective of this paper is to provide a detailed evaluation of type 2 diabetes mellitus research output from 1951-2012, using large-scale data analysis, bibliometric indicators and density-equalizing mapping. Data were retrieved from the Science Citation Index Expanded database, one of the seven curated databases within Web of Science. Using Boolean operators "OR", "AND" and "NOT", a search strategy was developed to estimate the total number of published items. Only studies with an English abstract were el… Show more

“…Bibliometric analysis is a statistical method for assessing both the quantitative and qualitative scope and adequacy of research efforts attained in an area of interest [41]. It can be used to determine national and international research focus and evaluate research performance in order to identify future research priorities, funding sources, and interdisciplinary collaborations [42][43][44]. It also provides a resource to policy-makers for implementing necessary prophylactic measures in case the analysis reveals a sharp increase in case reports or articles regarding a health issue in a particular geographic area [45,46].…”

“…The aim was to map research activity and assist research funding organizations such as the Commission to identify gaps and overlaps in the current state of diabetes research, and point out areas on which to focus future strategies. Previous studies that have applied a bibliometric approach to the outputs of diabetes research have mainly focused on a specific type of diabetes [4] or on another geographical area [5][6][7]. The DIAMAP website gives details of funders and researchers in Europe, but does not list individual papers [8].…”

“…Seglen and Aksnes [9] used the size and the productivity of research groups in the microbiology field in Norway as a measurement for bibliometric analysis. Geaney et al [7] performed bibliometric analysis and density-equalizing mapping on scientific publications related to type 2 diabetes mellitus. They collected citation data and used various citation-oriented measures such as the number of citations, the average number of citations per journal, the total number of publications, impact factor, and eigenfactor score.…”
