Twofold quantization in digital control: deadzone crisis and switching line collision

Abstract: Quantization, sampling and delay may cause undesired oscillations in digitally controlled systems. These vibrations are often neglected or replaced by random noise (Widrow and Kollár in Quantization noise: roundoff error in digital computation, signal processing, control, and communications, Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2008); however, we have shown that digital effects may lead to small amplitude deterministic chaotic solutions-the so-called microchaos (Csernák and Stépán in Int J Bifurc Chaos 5(20)… Show more

“…This can be true for other engineering applications as well, especially where the system is described by neutral or advanced delay differential equations (Insperger et al (2010); Insperger and Kovacs (2017)). Another aspect, which is also an outlook of this study, is that the digital nature of controllers can have significant effects on the nonlinear behavior of dynamical systems (Gyebrószki and Csernák (2019)). Investigating how the digital effects influence the nonlinear behavior of the controlled vehicle is an important direction of future research.…”

“…On the other hand, a method using ROs (ring oscillators) outputs values by relying on the synchronization of the clock [ 4 , 5 ]. It uses the quantization [ 6 , 7 ] of unstable oscillation signals to give a bit stream.…”

“…However, mathematical and computer modeling studies suggest that sensory quantization can have stabilizing effects [12,24,32,40,42,48,60]. Computer simulations of an inverted pendulum model for balance stabilized by timedelayed feedback are used to assess the effects of sensory quantization on control effort [19,20]. The results suggest that sensory quantization can slightly decrease control effort and that this benefit increases due to the effects of sensory masking to alter quantization thresholds [55].…”
