Two‐year results of microcatheter‐assisted trabeculotomy in paediatric glaucoma: a randomized controlled study

Abstract: At 2 years postoperatively, microcatheter-assisted trabeculotomy still yielded superior results in terms of IOP control and success rates in children with primary congenital glaucoma. The need for reoperation for glaucoma was significantly lower in the microcatheter group.

“…Full circumferential passage is not always possible and has been shown to be achieved less often in GCFCS than in most other forms of childhood glaucoma. Complete cannulation tends to lead to superior pressure control [120,121], however, adequate pressure control can be achieved even with less than 360°passage [120]. Haemorrhage is a common occurrence, which often spontaneously resolves but in an infant's aphakic eye, bleeding into the posterior segment can necessitate a core vitrectomy [122].…”

“…Shakraval et al [20] found a significantly higher absolute success rate after 1 year in circumferential trabeculotomy (80%) vs. conventional trabeculotomy (60%). El Sayed and Gawdat [21] also reported superiority of circumferential trabeculotomy in a randomized series of 62 patients. When opening Schlemm's canal twice with a rigid probe using two entry sites, the success rate equals that of circumferential microcatheter trabeculotomy [22].…”
