Two-Year Outcomes of Trabeculectomy and Phacotrabeculectomy in Primary Open Angle Versus Primary Angle Closure Glaucoma

Abstract: Précis: Phacotrabeculectomy had a significantly lower 24-month failure rate than the isolated trabeculectomy in both the primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) patients. The impact of adding phacoemulsification to trabeculectomy was found to be similar between the eyes with POAG and PACG. Purpose:The purpose of this study is to compare the 2-year outcomes of primary mitomycin C-augmented combined phacotrabeculectomy (Phaco+Trab) with isolated trabeculectomy (Trab) in phaki… Show more

“…But it can not completely control the disease progression. After phacoemulsi cation and intraocular lens implantation, it can create a better anterior chamber and restore the patient's visual ability in a shorter period of time [20] . The procedure is performed with a corneal incision, which facilitates the preservation of the intact bulbar conjunctiva so as to prepare for subsequent trabeculectomy [21] .…”

“…Unlike filtering surgery, where there is the option of using antifibrotics like mitomycin C to modulate wound healing, no such option exists for ab-interno canal-based MIGS. Although trabeculectomy remains the gold standard for lowering IOP, the outcomes of phaco-trabeculectomy are less optimal when compared with trabeculectomy alone,7 8 and performing phaco-MIGS as the initial surgery and reserving trabeculectomy for a second-stage procedure if target IOP is not achieved is an appropriate surgical option for eyes with early/moderate glaucoma.…”
