Partially Premixed Combustion (PPC) of fuels in the gasoline octane range has proven its potential to achieve simultaneous reduction in soot and NOX emissions, combined with high indicated efficiencies; while still retaining proper control over combustion phasing with the injection event, contrary to fully premixed strategies. However, gasoline fuels with high octane number as the commonly available for the public provide a challenge to ensure reliable ignition especially in the low load range, while fuel blends with lower octane numbers present problems for extending the ignition delay in the high load range and avoid the onset of knocking-like combustion. Thus, choosing an appropriate fuel and injection strategy is critical to solve these issues, assuring successful PPC operation in the full engine map.In this framework, the objective of the present investigation consists of evaluating the use of multiple injection strategies for achieving stable PPC operation, attaining low NOX and soot emissions together with high efficiencies. This research was carried out in a singlecylinder DOHC 2-stroke HSDI CI engine using 95 Research Octane Number (RON) gasoline fuel. Three different operating conditions in terms of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and speed were investigated: 3.1 bar IMEP and 1250 rpm, 5.5 bar IMEP and 1500 rpm and 10.4 bar IMEP and 1500 rpm. Parametric variations of injection timings, at different rail pressures and different fuel split between injections were experimentally performed to analyze the effect of the injection strategy over the combustion process, exhaust emissions and efficiency levels.Experimental results confirm how using an appropriate injection strategy helps to achieve stable PPC operation in the selected operating conditions; with competitive combustion stability, lower NOX and soot levels, and moderate CO and HC emissions with combustion efficiency over 96%, compared to Conventional Diesel Combustion (CDC).Finally, a detailed analysis of the local cylinder conditions was performed by means of 3D-CFD simulations in order to provide guidelines for further optimization of the gasoline PPC concept, when using multiple injection strategies in the 2-stroke engine under development.

In spite of the increasingly stringent emission standards, the constant growth of road traffic contributes to climate change and induces detrimental effects on the environment. The European REWARD project (REal World Advanced Technologies foR Diesel Engines) aims to develop a new generation of Diesel engines complying with stricter post Euro 6 legislation and with lower CO 2 emissions. Among the different technologies developed, a fuel-efficient two-stroke Diesel engine suited for C-segment passenger cars will be designed and experimentally evaluated. One major challenge for two-stroke engines is the achievement of an efficient scavenging. As the emptying of the in-cylinder burnt gases and the filling by fresh gases is performed at the same time, the challenge consists in removing as much burnt gases as possible while avoiding the by-pass of fresh air toward the exhaust line. For the considered application, the uniflow scavenging architecture, which is featured by ports located in the bottom of the cylinder and valves in the head, is selected. Two possible arrangements for the intake and the exhaust are compared: either the standard configuration for which the intake is ensured by the ports and the exhaust by the valves or the reverse configuration. Both standard and reverse configurations are first compared through 0D system simulations, performed with LMS Imagine.Lab Amesim and then by 3D CFD simulations with CONVERGE. The standard configuration is favored, thanks to better ISFC performances, especially at low and medium loads operating conditions. In addition, the scavenging is strongly penalized for the reverse architecture due to the drag downstream the intake valves.

Abstract. Opposed-Piston Two-Stroke (OP2S) diesel engines have been successfully used in many applications because of its high power efficiency. Uniform scavenging is used on OP2S diesel engines. Different from conventional diesel engine exchanging systems, intake ports and exhaust ports are located at each sides of the cylinder as OP2S scavenging system. A scavenging system optimization method, Genetic Algorithm-Support Vector Machine (GA-SVM), which employs Indicated Mean Effective Pressure (IMEP) as optimization goal is presented. The combinations of five key parameters including the width and length of intake and exhaust ports and the crank asymmetric angle are designed. All these combinations are calculated by GT-Power. The predicting model of OP2S diesel engine`s IMEP is built based on the 1D results. After verifying the accuracy of the predicting model, the optimized parameters are found. The results illustrate: using 1-D simulation coupled GA-SVM to optimize scavenging parameters in OP2S diesel engines is a rapid and effective method. The optimized IMEP is 12.86 bar. This paper presents some guidelines in the further OP2S diesel engines research. IntroductionThe opposed-piston two-stroke engine (OP2S) concept came into being in 1850`s. Wittig, a German engineer, designed and manufactured the world`s first coal gas fuel opposed-piston engine [1].From then on, many novel designs were brought out on aircrafts, marines and vehicles such as TS-3 engine manufactured by British Rootes company and 6-TD engine from Ukraine. However, rigid emission legislations slowed down the development of opposed-piston engines after 1970`s. In recent years, with the improvement of modern analytical tools, materials, and fuel supply system, engines from FEV, EcoMotor and Achates Power company have performed well in many fields [2,3,4,5,6]. OP2S draw more and more attention once again because of its simple, lightweight, high efficiency and high power density [7].In OP2S scavenging system, two pistons reciprocate opposite to each other in a common cylinder, piston port timings are controlled by two pistons. With this structural design, the need for cylinder head and valve mechanism are eliminated. In order to achieve better scavenging performance, larger ports area is wanted. However, according to the research by Peter Hofbauer [8], although larger intake and exhaust ports area can achieve better scavenging performance, shorter compression and expansion processes are inevitable. This will lead to the decrease of power efficiency. Zhenyu Zhang [9] also found larger crank asymmetric angle is benefit to the scavenging efficiency meanwhile compression ratio and expansion ratio decrease along with the increase of the crank asymmetric angle. This is also unfavorable to the development of engine performance. Therefore, in optimizing OP2S scavenging process, only taking scavenging efficiency into account is unreasonable.
