In this work, we study the rheological properties and the yielding behavior of cleaning pastes containing surfactant and abrasive particles, for three different types of surfactants, namely linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS), alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS) and sodium lauryl ether sulfonate (SLES). All the pastes were observed to have soft solid‐like consistency with their elastic modulus significantly greater than the viscous modulus. With around 36 volume percent of particulate matter, the high stiffness of the pastes suggests that particles form a space spanning network. Interestingly, when subjected to oscillatory shear deformation with increasing strain amplitude, the elastic modulus undergoes a decrease in two steps thereby showing a two‐step yielding behavior. It is observed that the first yield stress does not show frequency dependence, and for LAS‐containing paste was the largest followed by AOS‐ and SLES‐containing pastes, respectively. The second yield stress, on the other hand, for all the three pastes is observed to increase with frequency. Careful assessment of the experimental data suggests that the first yielding event is due to rupture of the network which leads to formation of particulate aggregates. The second yielding event is attributed to breakage of aggregates. In both yielding phenomena, surfactants play an important role. Since, the phase behavior of surfactant in water determines the inter‐particle interaction and network density, the nature of surfactant has a pivotal influence on both the yielding phenomena in surfactant suspension pastes used for cleaning purposes.

The yielding behavior of dense thermosensitive microgel suspensions of poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) with two different particle morphologies viz core–shell (CS) morphology and particles with uniform crosslink density were studied. Structural properties were examined using dynamic light scattering and yielding behavior was investigated by nonlinear oscillatory rheology. Suspensions of particles with uniform crosslinking density showed a typical hard sphere like behavior with the loss modulus (G″) exhibiting a single peak due to cage breaking while CS type particles shows a double yielding at different ranges of strain similar to that seen in attractive colloidal glasses. The first yielding process in CS microgels is interpreted as due to the disentanglement of the overlapped polymer chains from the shells of the neighboring microgels and the second yielding process due to the breakage of cages formed by neighboring microgel particles. Current study suggests that the interpenetration of polymer chains at high concentrations sets in an attractive like potential leading to double yielding phenomena in an otherwise purely repulsive system. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid (ABSA) is a valuable product of inorganic chemistry that is used to obtain linear alkylbenzene sulfonates. The current method for industrial production of ABSA includes sulfonation of linear alkylbenzene (LAB) with sulfur trioxide in tubular falling film reactors. In this work, we analyze the dependence of the dynamics of the deactivating components formation (tetralines and sulfones) on the structural parameters for a multi-tube film sulfonation reactor. To achieve this, we used an unsteady-state mathematical model that considers the feedstock composition and the change in the reaction medium activity. We determined that the film sulfonation reactor of optimal construction has 40 tubes of diameter of 43 mm. It was revealed that with an increase of the LAB supply to the reactor tube, the mass transfer coefficient also increases. For LAB flows of (95Á10 −5) and (2.86Á10 −5) m 3 s −1 per tube, the mass transfer coefficient is (1.73Á10 −2) m s −1 and (2.08Á10 −2) m s −1 , respectively.
