Two‐stage surgical treatment of giant congenital melanocytic nevus around the auricle

Abstract: Background This study presents the results of complete excision of giant congenital melanocytic nevi (GCMN) on the auricle, forehead, or periorbital area combined with tissue expansion, and skin graft transplantation performed in two stages based on 10 years of experience. Aims To solve the giant congenital melanocytic nevi on the auricle, forehead, or periorbital area with two‐stage operation. Patients/Methods A total of 21 patients with GCMN were included in this study. The operation combined tissue expander… Show more

“…15 Tissue expansion is an effective procedure for healing major skin defects following excision, as it preserves the original skin structure and color while causing minor injury to the donor site. 16 As a result, tissue expansion is advised to treat head L/GCMN. In our experience, expanders can be implanted in the abdomen or shoulder if the space available for insertion is limited, such as the extremities.…”

“…Pioneer experiences of surgical management about facial CMN have been reported: excision or staged excision, skin grafting, dermabrasion, tissue expansion or multiple re‐expansion combined with flaps transplantation 7–9 . Some non‐surgical alternative treatments, such as carbon dioxide cryotherapy, 10 laser, 11 and MAP/ERK kinase pathway inhibition, 12 have also emerged during the last decade. Because of the special localization of facial CMN, surgical treatments are still recommended 13 …”
