Two-stage product design selection by using PROMETHEE and Taguchi method: A case study

Abstract: The main goal of this paper was to introduce the methodology for product design selection. The proposed methodology combines two classical methods to find the most appropriate design for the new product, through a reduced number of alternatives (product variants) and experiments for the selection process. In the first stage, the multi-criteria decision-making method, PRO-METHEE was used for selecting the most suitable design, according to the chosen preferences and criteria. In the second stage, the Taguchi me… Show more

“…In the mean-std method, the indifference threshold is assigned the value of the difference between the average value and standard deviation, while the sum between the average value and standard deviation is assigned to the preference threshold. Following [26][27][28], we adopted the preference function of the linear type for the quantitative criteria, that is flood hazard, land use, the age of buildings, and population density. However, the algorithm was also run by choosing the usual preference function, which is the simplest possible one.…”

“…For this purpose, it is tried to search the recommended cutting conditions by considering the characteristics that have a major influence on the form accuracy, that is based on the cutting conditions that have been accumulated empirically through the expert group. To solve this problem, the Taguchi technique [8][9][10][11], which can easily evaluate the influence of each factor, was applied.…”

“…Taguchi method, which is generally used in single response optimization, can be integrated with multi-criteria decision-making methods and applied to obtain optimal conditions for multiple responses (Güldane, 2023). Taguchi-PROMETHEE (Crnjac et al, 2019), Taguchi-TOPSIS (Singh et al, 2011), and Taguchi-AHP (Salari et al, 2019) hybrid optimization techniques have been applied successfully in various process operations. Pal and Jadeja (2019) applied the Taguchi method in single response optimization to maximize polyphenolic antioxidant extraction from onion peel.…”
