Two spiral vortex breakdowns in confined swirling flow

Abstract: Two different scenarios of spiral vortex breakdown are observed experimentally and further investigated numerically in the swirl flow into a conical diffuser. The primary spiral vortex breakdown is observed near the inlet of the conical diffuser in cases of the cone angle β>3°. The secondary spiral vortex breakdown occurs at the exit of the cone at β≤3°. Also, the coexistence of two spiral vortices is observed. For the first time, we have visualized and explained the reasons of these observations.

“…There are comprehensive studies of the gas-dynamic features of complex flows (swirl flows, spiral vortices, vortex cores, etc.) in conical diffusers and their possible application in various fields [28][29][30][31][32][33]. For example, M. Tsoy and colleagues studied in detail the development and destruction of spiral vortices in conical diffusers with different cone expansion angles [28].…”

“…Spiral-type and bubble-type vortex breakdowns in a swirling flow through circular pipe were reviewed by Leibovich [2] and were later studied numerically by Delery [3]. Recently, two spiral vortex breakdowns were observed experimentally and numerically by Tsoyet al [4] in a conical diffuser driven by radial guide vanes. Vogel [5] observed bubble-type vortex breakdown inside a closed cylinder filled with fluid and with one rotating end and presented a map of the breakdown bubbles in an aspect ratio-Reynolds number plane.…”

“…The turbulent characteristics of the pump were established through numerical simulation. Tsoy et al [10] observed two different types of spiral vortex rupture and conducted further numerical research on the vortex entering the conical diffuser. In addition, the coexistence of two spiral eddies was also observed.…”
