Two‐Sided Edge Effect Studies and the Restoration of Endangered Ecosystems

Abstract: Edge effect is the modification of ecological patterns and processes that occur around the edge of two adjacent ecosystems. Depending on their aim, edge effect studies have adopted one of the following methodological approaches:(1) the one-sided approach-which studies ecological patterns and processes from an edge to the interior of just one of the habitats and (2) the two-sided approachwhich studies ecological patterns and processes across the whole gradient from the interior of one habitat to the interior of… Show more

“…Theoretically, semi-open corridors provide a suitable compromise for connectivity if the stenotopic species of the respective habitats are able to pass through (the same corridor might be used by simultaneously stenotopic heathland and woodland species). Although some researchers support two-sided edge-effect studies to create a positive research agenda for the restoration and expansion of endangered ecosystems (Fonseca & Joner 2007), semi-open corridors have, to our knowledge, not been studied or discussed in the literature.…”

“…Araucaria Forest fragments, on the other hand, can be the source of propagule of native species to the re-colonization of the anthropogenic matrix which can help in the restoration of this endangered ecosystem (Fonseca and Joner 2007). Araucaria angustifolia is able to colonize natural grasslands and cattle fields under the present climatic conditions (Behling et al 2004).…”

“…The preponderance of one-sided edge responses we observed is unusual among avian edge studies, something that may be explained in part by the relative rarity of studies considering both sides of a habitat edge Battin 2002, Fonseca andJoner 2007). Of the seven species for which full mixed-model analyses were possible, none displayed the type of two-sided transitional response predicted by a priori models (Kingston and Morris 2000, .…”
