Two Severe Cases of Tungiasis in Goat Kids in Uganda

Abstract: Tungiasis ensues from the penetration and burrowing of female sand fleas (Tunga spp.; Siphonaptera: Tungidae) in the skin of mammals. There are few case reports of severe tungiasis in goats and in these cases the Tunga species were not in most cases clearly identified. Two cases of severe tungiasis caused by Tunga penetrans in goat kids from tungiasis-endemic rural Uganda are reported. These are the first severe cases of tungiasis in goats reported from outside South America.

“…Studies aimed at improving this situation are very scarce. A recent case report on goat tungiasis suggests that a topical spray containing chlorfenvinphos 4.8%, dichlorphos 0.75% and gentian violet 0.145% (Supona aerosol, previously Pfizer, now Zoetis, South Africa) has tungicidal properties [ 38 ]. The objective of this study was to systematically evaluate potential curative effects of the Supona aerosol on pig tungiasis.…”

“…All authors working on the subject note that the presence of dogs, goats, pigs, cats, in or around the house is an important factor for the development of tungiasis. These animals are usually a serious reservoir for Tunga penetrans [6,8,21,22]. An indirect relationship between the incidence of tonsillitis and the type of water supply has also been demonstrated.…”

“…Although the disease is often considered to be only a nuisance and is, therefore, extremely neglected [ 4 ], human disease can be very severe without treatment [ 5 , 6 ]. Domestic animals can also show severe pathology [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ]. For example, pigs can be infected by several hundred fleas at the same time [ 9 ], which can be associated with severe pathology.…”
