Two series of inorganic melamine salts as flame retardants and smoke suppressants for flexible PVC

Abstract: Two series of inorganic melamine salts containing a tungstate or molybdate were synthesized as a flame retardant and smoke suppressant for flexible PVC, and their flame retardancy and smoke suppression were studied by limiting oxygen index (LOI), smoke density rating (SDR) test, cone calorimeter, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It can be found that the presence of melamine tungstate or melamine molybdate causes an obvious increase in LOI and a decrease in SDR. The cone… Show more

“…Then two series of melamine salts including melamine tungstate and melamine molybdate were prepared in a simple way. [ 66 ] Compared with (MA) 2 WO 4 , (MA) 2 MoO 4 had better flame retardant and smoke suppression efficiency. With 30 phr (MA) 2 MoO 4 , the LOI of flexible PVC sample increased from 25.5% to 30.8%, and the SDR decreased from 96.30% to 62.28%.…”

“…Inorganic hydroxides have been considered as major commercial alternatives to halogenated ame retardants due to their thermal dehydration, such as aluminum hydroxide or magnesium hydroxide are among the most widely used due to their non-toxic and environmentally friendly properties. However, their drawbacks are the need for high loading amounts (30 wt%-60 wt%), lead to serious loss of the mechanical properties [8][9][10][11][12]. Given this situation, there are a prompted much attention about how to proceed with urgent development of new ame retardants during the last decade.…”

“…In addition, water also absorbs the heat generated in the combustion zone, and MH can form a metal oxide coating to serve as an insulating protective layer during combustion 20–22 . Nanometerized MH can improve the flame retardancy, mechanical performances, and other properties of polymers because of its small size and thus, large surface effect 23,24 . MH is a polar powder and incompatible with the thermoplastic polymer matrix.…”
