Abstract:Human subjects could discriminate two separate components of pain during the submaximal effort tourniquet test. Since the effect of several test parameters was different on these two pain components it is suggested that attention would be paid to the discrimination of these pain components in the future studies with this methodology.
“…A pneumatic compression device (sphygmomanometer) was attached to the nondominant arm and inflated to 200 mm Hg to occlude blood flow. Before putting the arm to rest, the subject pressed a hand trainer 12 times every 2 s to increase ischemic pain due to the accumulation of metabolites [22]. Pain induction lasted for a maximum of 45 min.…”

“…1 Unmyelinated C fibers, whose function is preserved during prolonged tourniquet inflation, have been recognized to represent an important nociceptive pain pathway. 2 Increase in C fiber action potential frequency by hypoxia and other metabolic perturbations suggests their activation secondary to ischemia and compression.…”
The addition of clonidine 1 microg/kg or ketamine 0.1 mg/kg to lidocaine for IVRA delays the onset of unbearable tourniquet pain and decreases analgesic consumption for tourniquet pain relief, although ketamine has a more potent effect.
“…This method was compared to other procedures and proved highly reliable [11]. Ischemia pain induced by the tourniquet technique is presumably similar to clinical pain [24, 28]. No marked difference was detected between a.m. and p.m. measurements.…”

“…Pain measurement, especially by submaximum effort tourniquet technique, is scientifically accepted [11, 14, 18, 24, 28] and renders reliable data. In phase 1, the objective parameters TP and MTP were established.…”
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
