Two Polymerizable Derivatives of 2,2‘-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)

Abstract: [structure: see text] A versatile strategy for the synthesis of polymerizable derivatives of the redox-active indicator dye 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) is reported. Two products are shown to illustrate how the final step in the synthetic strategy can be used to alter the physical properties of the product. Both products were characterized spectroscopically and electrochemically. The hydrophilic monomer (sABTS) was polymerized, and the utility of this polymer (polyABTS) is demon… Show more

“…The concept of using redox polymer (with osmium bypirydylium functional groups) film with laccase bonded by electrostatic interactions was developed for the construction of biofuel cell cathode [27,28,40]. The electrode modified with 2,2 0 -azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonate (ABTS 2À ) functionalised polymer film was recently tested for dioxygen reduction by laccase dissolved in aqueous solution [39]. Recently, we proposed immobilisation of mediator (ABTS 2À [41] or syringaldazine [44]) in heterogeneous bulk modified electrode composed of hydrophobic silicate and carbon microparticles.…”

“…Byproducts, such as the 3-ethyl-2(3H)-benzothiazolone (8) and the azine N-monoxide (9), will form during the synthesis (Scheme 2c). Fei et al 31 reported that the reaction of 2-methylthio-3-ethyl-benzothia-zolium salt with 5 will yield the precursor of ABTS (Scheme 2d).…”

“…This system seems to be promising because the continuous supply of the enzyme solves the problem of its instability while microfluidic geometry allows for membraneless contact between the catholyte and the anolyte. However, for the membraneless biofuel cell working in quiet conditions, immobilization of ABTS 2À occurs [101,106,128,129,[131][132][133][134]139,143,155,160,170,175,181,184,203].…”

“…Only one attempt at the synthesis and use of polymer with ABTS pendant groups for electrode modification was reported [203], but enzyme immobilization in this film was not reported. It was tested only in the presence of laccase in solution and the catalytic current density obtained was rather low.…”
