Phonon-dispersion branches for specific directions of the wavevector, one-and twophonon densities, and the lattice specific heat C , have been calculated for NaNO, using the same lattice dynamical model which was applied recently to trigonal CaCO,. The results of the calculations are compared with available experimental data from inelastic neutron scattering experiments, the specific heat C,, and the two-phonon infrared absorption spectrum.Mit dem gleichen gitterdynamischen Modell, das kiirzlich fur trigonales CaCO, benutzt wurde, werden die Phonon-Dispersionszweige fur bestimmte Richtungen des Wellenvektors, die Ein-und Zwei-Phononendichten und die spezifische Gitterwarme C, fur NaNO, berechnet. Die Ergebnisse der Rechnungen werden mit verfiigbaren experimentellen Werten aus inelastischen Neutronen-Streuexperimenten, der spezifischen Warme C, und dem infraroten Zwei-Phononen-Absorptionsspektrum verglichen.

Lattice dynamics of crystals of the calcite structure. I. Normal frequencies and normal modes at zero wave vector

on the occasion of his 60th birthday Normal frequencies and normal modes of the lattice vibrations for the wave vector 1 9 1 = 0 have been calculated for the isomorphic series of NaNO,, CaCO,, and MgCO,. The calculated frequencies of the infrared-and Raman-active modes have been fitted to the experimentally known values for T = 300 OK by variation of the coupling constants. Three different models have been used: a) I n model 1 only the short-range interactions by central forces have been taken into account. b) In model 2 the Coulomb-interaction has been included (rigidion model). c) I n model 3 the anisotropic polarizability of the anion has been considered in addition (shell model). The best f i t has been obtained with the shell-model. The calculated frequencies and eigen-vectors are given and discussed in comparison with experimental results.Fur die isomorphe Reihe der Kristalle NaNO,, CaCO, und MgCO, wurden Eigenfrequen-Zen und Schwingungsformen der auDeren Gitterschwingungen fur den Wellenvektor IyI = 0 bestimmt, indem die berechneten Frequenzen der ultrarot-und Raman-aktiven Eigenschwingungen an die bei 300 " K ermittelten experimentellen Werte durch Variation der Kopplungsparameter angepaDt wurden. Fur die Berechnung wurden drei verschiedene Modelle benutzt : a) I m Modell 1 wurden nur die kurzreichweitigen Zentralkriifte betrachtet. b) I m Modell 2 wurde daruber hinaus die Coulomb-Wechselwirkung beriicksichtigt (Modell des starren Ions). c) I m Modell 3 wurde zusatzlich noch die anisotrope Polarisierbarkeit der Anionenkomplexe beachtet (Schalenmodell). Die beste Anpassung wurde mit dem Schalenmodell erzielt. Eigenfrequenzen und -vektoren werden angegeben und mit experimentellen Ergebnissen verglichen.

Phonon dispersion curves of the external and internal modes of trigonal CaCO, have been calculated for some directions in the Brillouin zone. The one-phonon density, the two-phonon density, and the specific heat havc also been determined. The results are compared \\ ith available experimental data on the specific heat and the two-phonon absorption spectrum. The frequencies of the external modes have been calculated neglecting the internal degrees of freedom of the complex ions CO; -, using a shell model which takes the short range interaction of nearest neighbours, the Coulomb interaction, and the polarizability of the complex ions into account. The variation of the frequencies of the internal modes with wave vector y has been determined by considering only the coupling of the transition dipoles of the complex ions. For this purpose the dipole-dipole interaction formalism normally used a t wave vector y = 0 to calculate the Davydov splitting of the internal modes is extended t o wave vectors ly] $; 0.Fur den trigonalen Kristall CaCO, wurden fur einige Richtungen in der Brillouin-Zone die Dispersionszweige der auBeren und inneren Schwingungen berechnet. AuBerdem wurde die Einphononendichte, die Zweiphononendichte und die spezifische Warme bestimmt. Die Ergebnisse werden mit experimentellen Werten der spezifischen Warme und des Zweiphononen-Absorptionsspektrunis verglichen. Bei der Berechnung der Frequenzen der h B eren Schwingungen werden die inneren Schwingnngsfreiheitsgrade der Komplexionen COYnicht berucksichtigt. Die Frequenzen werden im Rahmen eines Schalenmodells berechnet, welches die Nahkraft-Wechselwirkung nachster Nachbam,., die Coulombwechselwirkang und die Polarisierbarkeit der Komplexionen enthalt. Die Anderung der Frequenzen der inneren Schwingungen mit dem Wellenvektor y wird bestimmt, indem nur die Wechselwirkung der Ubergangsdipole der Komplexionen berucksichtigt wird. Hierzu wird der Formalismus dieser Wechselwirkung, welcher beim Wellenvektor y = 0 zur Berechnung der Davydov-Aafspaltung dcr inneren Schwingungen benutzt wird, auf Welleiivektoren lyl $= 0 rrweitert.
