Two Outbreaks ofListeria monocytogenesInfection, Northern Spain

Abstract: In the province of Gipuzkoa, Spain (≈700,000 inhabitants), 7–12 episodes of human listeriosis were recorded annually during 2009–2012. However, during January 2013–February 2014, 27 episodes were detected, including 11 pregnancy-associated cases. Fifteen cases in 2 epidemiologically unrelated outbreaks were caused by a rare type of Listeria monocytogenes, sequence type 87 serotype 1/2b.

“…Based on somatic and flagellar antigens L. monocytogenes has 13 serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b, 1/2c, 3a, 3b, 3c, 4a, 4ab, 4b, 4c, 4d, 4e and three of them (1/2a, 1/2b, 4b) are more frequently related to human listeriosis (CLARK et al, 2010;FDA, 2012;CARTWRIGHT et al, 2013;PÉREZ-TRALLERO et al, 2014).…”

“…Contaminated foie gras from 3 unopened samples linked to a 2012-2013 Spain outbreak contained L. monocytogenes at 5.2 × 10 4 CFU/g (56). These data could help us gain better understanding of the risk associated with L.…”

“…Over this period, outbreaks were additionally documented in Austria, Portugal, Spain, and Denmark (1, 58). Listeriosis has only recently been listed as a notifiable disease in Spain since March 2015 (9), and therefore, the annual incidence may be even higher (15, 10, 11). Reduced immunocompetency of listeriosis patients was recently reported as a major risk factor for fatal outcomes (12).…”

“…Two northern Spain regions, Gipuzkoa in the Basque country (~700,000 inhabitants) and Cantabria (~350,000 inhabitants), were selected to calculate annual incidence, since these communities have voluntarily reported a high number of listeriosis cases since 2008 (1, 4, 5, 10, 11). We compiled data on genetic epidemiology, clinical manifestations, virulence of clinical isolates, and immunological parameters in listeriosis patients over the period of a year (August 2014–September 2015).…”
