Two novel totiviruses in the white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera

Abstract: There is little information about commensal viruses in the white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera, although it is an important agricultural insect. Here, two novel double-stranded RNA viruses related to the viruses in the family Totiviridae were identified using next-generation sequencing and tentatively named Sogatella furcifera totivirus 1 and 2 (SfTV1 and SfTV2). Their complete genomes consist of 6310 and 6303 nt, respectively, showing typical genomic features with viruses in the family Totiviridae. … Show more

“…Totiviridae also include other four officially recognized genera, Leishmaniavirus and Trichomonasvirus, which exclusively infect protozoa with host-specificity, and Totivirus, and Victorivirus, which infect fungi [5]. Although many unclassified Totiviridae have been so far reported, belonging to the genera Artivirus which infect arthropod or fish and Insevirus, with insect hosts, it has recently been proposed that they can be included in the same clade with Giardiavirus [11][12][13].…”

“…Viruses in the genera Totivirus and Victorivirus mainly infect fungi while Giardiavirus , Leishmaniavirus and Trichomonasvirus are commonly present in protozoa. Two additional genera were recently proposed, including Artivirus with arthropod and fish hosts [6], and Insevirus with insect hosts [7]. Several totiviruses, mainly the members of genus Totivirus , have been reported in obligate biotrophs such as powdery mildew (ascomycetes) and rust fungi (basidiomycetes) [8, 9].…”

“…We also identified five known viruses containing two positive-strand viruses, RTV1 and RPiV1, as well as three double-stranded viruses, RRSV, NLRV, and RToV [1,19,20]. It is worth noting that RPiV1 and RToV were first discovered in the whitebacked planthopper, Sogatella furcifera [20,21]. Here, we find that both RPiV1 and RToV viruses have a high abundance in Rby2-45, suggesting rice plants are their hosts.…”
