Two new species of Xanthopimpla (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) from Western Amazonia, with a revised key to the Neotropical species of the genus

Abstract: Xanthopimpla Saussure, 1892 is one of the largest genera of the family Ichneumonidae. Th e genus is very species rich in Indo-Australia but poorly represented in the Neotropical region. In this paper two morphologically very distinctive species of the genus, X. amazonica sp. n. Gómez, Sääksjärvi & Veijalainen, and X. jussilai sp. n. Veijalainen, Sääksjärvi & Broad, are described and illustrated. Th e new species have been collected in the Peruvian and Ecuadorean Amazonia. A revised key to the Neotropical speci… Show more

Mean annual precipitation is about 2770 mm and annual mean temperature 23 °C with monthly mean temperatures varying 20–26 °C (Gómez et al ., ). This is somewhat drier, cooler and more seasonal than in Allpahuayo‐Mishana.…”

“…Following Kunz (1988), we invested effort in trapping insects from the same location where the bats foraged. To assess insect availability, we used two widely used and efficient trap types (S€ a€ aksj€ arvi et al 2004Gomez et al 2009;Janzen et al 2009;Lilley et al 2012;Veijalainen et al 2012Veijalainen et al , 2013: emergence traps (E. “…Xanthopimpla species can be recognized by yellow body with stout legs and variables spots or black bands on abdominal tergites .Bidentate mandibles and lower teeth twisted are two characters which differentiate this genus from others (Gauld, 1984). A lot of faunal studies of this genus from different regions of the world include Thunberg (1822); Saussure (1892) and Krieger (1914) from Palearctic region; Tosquinet (1896) and Seyrig (1932) from Afrotropical region; Townes 1969 andGómez et al (2009;2014) from Neotropical regions and Townes & Chiu (1970), Gupta (1987), Pham et al (2011) from oriental regions etc.…”
