Two new species of the Trichostrongylidae (Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea), parasitic in Gorilla gorilla beringei in Uganda

Abstract: Two new species of trichostrongylid parasites of a mountain gorilla in Uganda are described. Paralibyostrongylus kalinae n. sp. is characterised by a short dorsal ray, a dorsal oesophageal tooth and two median longitudinal ridges in the vulvar region. The species is more closely related to leporid parasites than to P. hebrenicutus, another species known from the gorilla. A "transfuge" phenomenon, i.e. transfer to a new host without speciation is suggested. Hyostrongylus kigeziensis n. sp. has several specific … Show more

“…Again, Murshidia species are only otherwise known from elephants, rhinoceroses, and suids (Anderson, 1992). The host ranges and possible origins of the two seemingly common trichostrongyles are discussed by Durette-Desset et al (1992): their closest relatives are parasites of herbivores unrelated to primates. Of all the parasites shown in this and previous studies to be normal components of the gorilla endofauna, only Oesophagostomum spp.…”

“…The dead female contained numerous specimens of Paralibyostrongylus kalinae and Hyostrongylus kigeziensis, two trichostrongyles described by Durette-Desset et al (1992). In addition, numerous specimens of the larger strongyles Oesophagostomum stephanostomum and Murshidia devians were found in approximately equal numbers.…”

“…Two parasitic nematode larvae were not identified. We suspect that these may be a species of Trichostrongylidae recently discovered in Bwindi gorillas 10. We found no evidence of human parasites in this group of gorillas.…”
